Nut Gathering

I was sitting on my deck yesterday on one of those "Carolina Blue" Fall afternoons where the air was crisp, the sky was clear, and the smell of a change was all around.  Sometimes it's hard to know when it's really Fall.  I don't think you actually know the day it happens, you just realize like I did yesterday that it's not Summer anymore.

My three dogs, Zack, Roxanne, and Pearl were lying beside me, always vigilant in case they are needed.  Zack and Roxanne are chocolate and black labradors and Pearl is a labradoodle.  It's probably a fantasy of mine that any protective instincts exist among them unless it's over something that Science Diet manufactures.  Still, it would have to be close enough to put a big sloppy lab foot on without getting up.  But I digress...

Every now and then I would be interrupted from my reading by the rustle of squirrels in the leaves behind the deck.  It was an interesting mixture of squirrels for a Fall afternoon.  Some were clearly calm and confident, going about their final days of storing nuts for eating and grass for bedding for the winter.  These were clearly serious squirrels who understood the necessity of being self-reliant, responsible, and community sensitive.

There were other squirrels, not as diligent, who appeared to be enjoying the equivalent of a sort of Squirrel Cigar Bar, chewing on pine bark twigs, discussing Squirrel Health Care Issues, and I suspect, halfway believing that they didn't have to work and prepare because some Big Brother Squirrel was going to be looking out for them.  They had this sort of smug Squirrel Look like they knew something the others didn't.  Because last Winter was an easy one, food plentiful, and a bird feeder that always had something in it, they assumed this coming winter would be the same.  You could just see it in their faces.  Entitlement Squirrels! Yep, that's what they were.

It occurred to me that in the country right now, we have sort of a two squirrel culture.  One group of squirrels that I belong too takes full responsibility for what might happen to them down the road and is always storing and gathering nuts and not wasting them or acting like them.  The other group of squirrels that I know about are still living with their squirrel parents, have no extra nuts put away and truly believe (at least by their actions) that because today was shiny and bright, then tomorrow will be too.

We need to get down to  serious nut gathering in the country. in a big and fast way.  It's not too late to start but we need to start.  The efforts of a few can't meet the needs of the many. Collegiality even among squirrels tends to go out the window as the food supply dwindles.  First thing you know they'll be Pine Tree Riots and Squirrel Garbage Strikes as people ask the Big Squirrel in the Sky to deliver what they believe they're entitled to.

So, here's the lesson from the back porch:  The redistribution of nuts from those who earned them to those who didn't isn't likely to happen without great pain and anquish for everyone in the squirrel community.  Every sane working class squirrel is going to resist giving their nuts away even if the President of No Nut Squirrel Nation tells them too.

I think the same thing will hold true for the human community as well.  So, let's all start gathering nuts and stop acting like them.
