My Bigger Future
My friend Dan Sullivan in Toronto, Canada. founder of The Strategic Coach, a lifetime focusing program for entrepreneurs, (www.strategiccoach.com) taught me something that I believe was responsible for saving my life and giving me the energy to combat the challenge of a brain tumor. While the lifetime verdict for this tumor is still up for grabs, I know that the idea gave me lots of energy. In fact it was like a turbo-charger on my spiritual, intellectual, and emotional immune system.
The concept was something called “The Bigger Future”. It’s premise is that the bigger and more exciting your future is, the more you have to prepare for it. Since everything in my life down the road that’s important to me depends on me being alive, I had to think about all the things that would keep me alive barring just a random explosion or recurrence of this thing inside my head.
According to the medical stats, I should be dead now. Ninety days to six months is the usual plan for this accompanied by loss of vision, movement, incontinence and ability to think clearly. Shortly it will be a year since the surgery. Since all of what I do requires that I be able to see, fly on planes, not pee in my pants and put two or more sentences together correctly, it was pretty important that I find a different plan than the doctors indicated I might have to follow.
I’m one of those guys deep down who likes a real challenge and if I don’t have one, will probably go put together a set of situations and circumstances that create one. Even if the challenge is not of my own making, I have learned to ask “WHAT” I am going to do instead of “WHY” this happened to me when a challenging situation occurs.
Since I’m not given to much self reflection or analysis about why things are happening to me, I tend to just focus on what I have to become to transform the situation. Thinking this way is like a two for one deal- I transform the situation and become something more in the process as well. So, I started thinking about what I needed to do to create a bigger future and The My Victory Solution concept came to mind. Ideally, 20 years down the road, I’d like the MVS Website to be the Victory equivalent of MySpace or FaceBook. Only instead of short clips of people sticking water hoses up their nose or riding a bicycle off a house roof into a garbage can, it would be filled with great, inspirational stories. My friend Jon Loduca brought it to life. (www.thewisdomlink.com) Then I thought about how to keep all the intellectual capital I’ve created alive and we added enhancements to the Advisor Freedom website (www.advisorfreedom.com). This website and the unique capabilities on there are designed to free professional advisors from the stifling regulation and bureaucracy they labor under and simply let them package their lifetime wisdom and experience and make a living from that.
My dogs are important to me. A stepfather with a wonderful “associate” daughter, Ashley, I’ve never had children of my own. The dogs: Roxanne, Zachary Brian, and Pearl (two labs and a labradoodle) are really my children. So, a foundation that kept dogs like them safe from Disease, Abuse, Abandonment and Disaster seemed like a noble goal over twenty plus years. We’ve made huge progress with this already with our SAVE ONE CAMPAIGN (www.americanpetcross.com )
Since I took care of my father when he had Alzheimer’s I knew that less fortunate people would struggle with aging parents. We created The Parent Care Solution (www.parentcaresolution.com) to serve as a resource center to help Boomers and their parents., We’ve even created a special themed community in the hills near Tryon, NC called Derbyshire. It’s about 150 homesites, around 40 acre lake, with connected horse riding trails totaling almost 100 miles. Take a look at it at www.derbyshirenc.com While some of these were in existence or progress before the cancer, having the cancer lit a fire underneath them and me. As I met with out teams, new ideas started to explode like a Fourth of July fireworks display. Everything could get bigger and better, and not be compromised in the process.
Part of creating a Victory Solution is to create a Bigger Future that requires lots of daily victories focused around your learning, growth, and progress. Ask for big challenges and you’ll get them. You’ll also have the power to transform them.
You are awesome and a real encouragement. Thank you
